อาสาสมัครสาธารณสุข มีชื่อย่อว่า “อสม.” จำแนกเป็น 4 ประเภท (Guru Snook, 2556) ได้แก่
1อาสาสมัครสาธารณสุขในพื้นที่ภูมิภาค หมายความว่า อาสาสมัครสาธารณสุขที่ปฏิบัติงานอยู่ในพื้นที่ส่วนภูมิภาค ทั้งในเขตชนบทและเขตเมือง รวมถึงเมืองพัทยา เรียกว่า อาสาสมัครสาธารณสุขประจำหมู่บ้าน (อสม.)
2อาสาสมัครสาธารณสุข ในเขตกรุงเทพมหานคร หมายความว่า อาสาสมัครสาธารณสุขที่ปฏิบัติงานอยู่ในพื้นที่กรุงเทพมหานคร เรียกว่า อาสาสมัครกรุงเทพมหานคร (อสส.)
3อาสาสมัครสาธารณสุข ของหน่วยงานหรือองค์กรต่าง ๆ ที่ผ่านการอบรมตามแนวทางของกระทรวงสาธารณสุข เช่น อาสาสมัครสาธารณสุขการไฟฟ้าฝ่ายผลิตแห่งประเทศไทย (อสม.กฟผ.) และอาสาสมัครสาธารณสุขขนส่งมวลชน (อสม.ขสมก) ฯลฯ
4อาสาสมัครสาธารณสุขกิตติมศักดิ์ หมายความว่า บุคคลผู้ทำคุณประโยชน์หรือสนับสนุนการดำเนินงานของอาสาสมัครสาธารณสุข
หน้าที่หลัก ๆ ของอาสาสมัครสาธารณสุข หรือ อสม. คือ ทำหน้าที่ดูแลคุณภาพชีวิตของคนในชุมชนให้มีสุขภาพแข็งแรงอย่างทั่วถึงและต่อเนื่อง เพื่อให้คนในชุมชนปรับเปลี่ยนพฤติกรรมสุขภาพ จนกลายเป็น “ชุมชนจัดการระบบสุขภาพเข้มแข็ง เมืองไทยแข็งแรง” ตามนโยบายของภาครัฐนั่นเอง
ทั้งนี้ ผู้ที่จะเข้ามาเป็นอาสาสมัครนั้น จะต้องมีความสมัครใจที่จะทำงานเพื่อส่วนรวมด้วยความเสียสละ และมีเวลาพอที่จะช่วยเหลือชุมชน นอกจากนี้ ควรจะเป็นคนที่มีที่อยู่อาศัยและประกอบอาชีพในหมู่บ้านนั้น ๆ ด้วย เพื่อให้ประชาชนเข้าไปติดต่อได้ง่าย
คุณสมบัติของอาสาสมัครสาธารณสุขประจำหมู่บ้าน ผู้ที่จะเข้ามาเป็นอาสาสมัครในการดูแลสุขภาพอนามัยของเพื่อน บ้านโดยมิหวังผลตอบแทนใดๆ เรียกว่า อาสาสมัครสาธารณสุขประจำหมู่บ้าน หรือ อสม. ควรมีคุณสมบัติดังต่อไปนี้
1มีความสมัครใจที่จะทำงานเพื่อส่วนรวมด้วยความเสียสละ และมีเวลาพอที่จะช่วยเหลือชุมชน
2มีความรู้อ่านออกเขียนได้
3เป็นผู้ที่ชาวบ้านไว้วางใจ
4มีที่อยู่อาศัยและประกอบอาชีพในหมู่บ้านนั้น ๆ
5มีอาชีพแน่นอนและมีรายได้เลี้ยงตนเอง
6ตั้งบ้านเรือนอยู่ในสถานที่ที่ประชาชนไปติดต่อได้ง่าย
7ไม่จำกัดเพศ และไม่จำกัดอายุ
8ไม่ควรเป็นข้าราชการ กำนัน ผู้ใหญ่บ้าน หรือแพทย์ประจำตำบล
